What Kinds of Workplace Discrimination are Illegal?

In many instances, workplaces are not allowed to discriminate against their workers. Various laws exist to ensure that employees are not discriminated against.

If you are pregnant, employers cannot discriminate against you based on that reason. It is illegal for employers not to hire someone or to fire someone because the individual is expecting a baby. Discrimination against those who are pregnant is covered under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. 

It is illegal for employers to discriminate against you based on your national origin or your religion. Employers also cannot refuse to hire you or terminate your employment just because you belong to a certain denomination. 

You cannot be legally fired from a job because you have complained about harassment on the job site. Whistleblower laws prevent employers from demoting or firing you based upon your on-the-job harassment complaints. 

Employers cannot discriminate against you or refuse to hire you based upon any sort of genetic testing. Such results cannot be legally used in hiring or firing decisions.
